Life Insurance Without the Doctor’s Visit

Life Insurance Without the Medical Exam: What You Need to Know

Most people don’t realise it, but the majority of life insurance applications today don’t require a full medical exam. Unless your desired cover amount or your health history exceeds certain thresholds, you can usually get approved based on a simple application form and a short report from your GP. That means no needles, no waiting rooms, and far less stress.

I recently took a call from a client who was very clear about one thing: she wanted life insurance, but absolutely no medical exams.

I asked her why, and she smiled. Most people fall into one of two categories when they avoid medicals:

  1. They’re healthy but nervous about what a test might reveal.
  2. They have a health concern but haven’t been officially diagnosed and don’t want it affecting their premium.

But this client had a third reason: “I just don’t like my GP!” she confessed.

Turns out, she’d been seeing the same family doctor for years and didn’t want to change or disappoint them. Classic small-town reasoning, really.

Fortunately, she didn’t need a medical exam at all — and here’s why.

When You Can Apply Without a Medical

There are two main ways to get life insurance without going under the needle:

1️⃣ Over-50s Life Insurance
This type of cover is designed to skip all medical underwriting. If you’re over 50, you simply complete the application and the insurer accepts you, regardless of health. Even serious illnesses aren’t a barrier.

This option is ideal for people with major health issues who would otherwise struggle to get standard life cover. Some insurers no longer offer this directly, but there are still options through specialist providers.

2️⃣ Standard Term Life Insurance
For most people, a standard term life policy doesn’t automatically trigger a medical. In fact, roughly 90% of our clients get approved without a medical exam.

Insurers primarily base their decision on:

  • Your application form
  • Any follow-up health questionnaires
  • A short Private Medical Attendant Report (PMAR) from your GP

So, if your health is stable and you’re applying for a typical cover amount, a medical exam isn’t usually necessary.

When a Medical Exam Might Be Required

While most applicants breeze through without a medical, there are some situations where a nurse screening or full medical is unavoidable:

  • Serious health conditions – If your GP doesn’t have recent records.
  • Non-medical limits exceeded – If your requested cover amount or age surpasses the insurer’s non-medical threshold.
  • High BMI – A BMI over 40 often triggers a basic nurse check of height, weight, and vital signs.

The “non-medical limit” is just industry jargon for the maximum cover you can apply for without automatic medical requirements. Your age and the cover amount are the two main factors. Older applicants or those seeking higher coverage are more likely to require checks.

Pick the right insurer, and you’ll avoid unnecessary tests. Pick the wrong one, and you could find yourself filling forms, seeing a nurse, and getting poked and prodded unnecessarily.

The Role of Your GP

Sometimes insurers will ask your GP for a PMAR (Private Medical Attendant Report). This is a short, confidential summary of your medical history. It’s routine and far less invasive than a full medical exam.

Insurers mainly want reassurance that:

  • You’re healthy enough for the cover amount requested
  • Any existing conditions are stable and well managed

If your age and cover exceed the non-medical threshold but your health is good, we can usually find a fairer insurer to keep things simple.

Bottom Line

Most applicants don’t need a medical exam at all. No blood tests, no nurse visits, no stress. The trick is to apply with an insurer that has the highest non-medical limits. That’s how you keep the process smooth and straightforward.

If you’d like, I can recommend the right insurer and cover based on your personal situation. Just complete this short questionnaire, and I’ll get back to you personally with guidance.
